ChatGPT Usage Eligibility
Student Authorization
OpenAI ChatGPT EDU is only available to degree program (matriculated) students who are currently enrolled in and taking classes. It is not available to students on leave of absence, or former students in their 1-year transition away from university systems.
Faculty and Staff Authorization
OpenAI ChatGPT EDU is only available to general fund employees who have a current active job record in PeopleSoft. It is not available to Auxiliary or Foundation employees, or contractors.
Grace Periods
Our license with OpenAI (negotiated and purchased by the Chancellor's Office) does not provide us sufficient seats to offer ChatGPT to
- former students in the 1-year period provided to transition away from SJSU systems. In May 2026 the CSU contracted a new license that will allow recent graduates to continue access for 1 year, but that license does not take effect until July 2026, and SJSU has just started implementing support for the new license.
- faculty who are not currently employed but are in the 1-year faculty business continuity period that grants them access to many other University systems.
Deletion warnings
Because there are no grace periods, we do not have a mechanism to warn students, faculty or staff before ChatGPT account deletion.
Data Export
Unfortunately, OpenAI has not provided any mechanism to export any data from ChatGPT EDU. Data export is not possible.
