Chemical Deliveries

Field Work or Work at Off-Campus Facilities

Contact the College Safety Team for help.

SJSU Main Campus

  • Compressed Gases and Cryogenic Liquids: Department staff coordinate deliveries, collect empty cylinders or dewars for pickup, and disperse deliveries to labs/shops. Individual lab/shop personnel are not allowed to directly coordinate deliveries or pickups in order to avoid negative impacts on loading dock operations. Contact your department chair for more information.
  • Chemical Orders: All chemical orders must be addressed and delivered to the College Safety Team in Duncan Hall 637 except for 1) “non-hazardous and neutral” chemicals or 2) "hazardous household consumer products.” This process helps to avoid unintentional delivery of hazardous materials to clean spaces like departmental offices. The SJSU Main Campus chemical delivery address follows:

    San José State University
    Faculty/Staff Name, DH 637
    129 South 10th Street
    San José, CA 95192
  • Chemical Pickup: Upon arrival, the College Safety Team barcodes chemicals into the lab/shop chemical inventory, stores temperature-sensitive chemicals in appropriate conditions, and checks that applicable Standard Operating Procedures are in place. Then, the College Safety Team contacts the faculty or staff member to pick up the chemical during business hours. A trained lab/shop delegate can be assigned to assist with pickup. This process ensures that chemical inventories are updated and enables the College Safety Team to provide appropriate support for safe storage, handling, and waste management.
  • Direct Delivery: Direct delivery to department offices, department service centers, or research labs is only allowed for household consumer products and non-hazardous and neutral chemicals.
  • Biological Materials: For biological materials without any chemical hazards beyond dry ice or liquid nitrogen used for shipping, see the Biological Material Management page for guidance. Direct delivery to department labs is not allowed if biological materials are only chemically hazardous (fixatives) and not biohazardous. If the materials are both biohazardous and chemically hazardous, contact the College Safety Team for assistance routing the materials appropriately.

Moss Landing Marine Labs

  • Compressed Gases, Dry Ice, and Cryogenic Liquids: Deliveries are made to the Moss Landing Marine Labs Main Lab Corporation Yard, the Shore Lab main entry, or the Norte parking lot storage area. Lab/shop supervisors are responsible to arrange for the delivery, prepare any empty cylinders/dewars for removal, and to promptly move the cylinders/dewars to the lab/shop upon arrival. Overflow storage is available in Main Lab room 510 for inert and oxidizer compressed gas cylinders.
  • Chemical Orders: All chemical orders must be addressed to the appropriate lab/shop building and will be delivered to the receiving area of that building. To help avoid miscommunications, use the lab/shop supervisor name for the delivery address. Avoid addressing hazardous materials packages to the facility name, names of collaborators from other institutions, or lab/shop personnel names.
  • Prompt Pickup: Lab/shop supervisors are responsible for implementing internal processes for prompt pickup from the delivery area to minimize the time hazardous materials are present outside of labs/shops.
  • Large or Hazardous Deliveries: If the delivery is particularly large or hazardous, the lab/shop supervisor must inform the Moss Landing Marine Labs Safety Officer to help coordinate safe storage as soon as possible after delivery. Examples include: delivery of numerous field samples, drums of chemicals, or cases of chemicals.
