CoS Safety Equipment
For more information, please review the Environmental Health & Safety one page lessons or contact the College Safety Team.
First Aid Kits
Class A first aid kits are required in locations that are accessible to lab/shop personnel.
- Specialized First Aid Kits: Lab/shop supervisors are responsible for procuring and maintaining specialized first aid kits such as animal bite kits and hydrofluoric acid exposure kits. The College Safety Team can consult about specialized first aid kits and will evaluate them during the regular lab/shop inspections.
- SJSU Main Campus: Lab/shop supervisors are responsible for replenishing their Class A first aid kits when supplies are expired or depleted. This link to the college standard kit provides details about the content requirements - replenishment with similar products from another vendor is acceptable.
- Moss Landing Marine Labs: The first aid kit strategy for Moss Landing differs from the main campus because this “satellite” facility is further from urgent care support and lacks an on-site Student Wellness Center. The closest Student Wellness Center is located on the CSU Monterey Bay campus. First aid kits are available in designated shared locations and are replenished at least twice a year by the Moss Landing Marine Labs Safety Officer.
Fire Extinguishers, Safety Showers, Eyewashes, and Automated External Defibrillators
On SJSU Main Campus, fire extinguishers, safety showers, eyewashes, and automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are maintained by SJSU Environmental Health & Safety (ehs@sjsu.edu). The Moss Landing Safety Officer is delegated this responsibility for the Moss Landing Marine Labs. Contact ehs@sjsu.edu to report any concerns regarding this safety equipment.
- Lab/shop supervisors may be required to procure specialized fire extinguishers such as Coast Guard approved extinguishers, Class K extinguishers for cook tents, or Class D extinguishers for flammable metals. Once procured, university Environmental Health & Safety will coordinate annual maintenance and monthly inspections for specialized extinguishers.
- Both online and hands-on fire extinguisher training is available for labs/shops that conduct particularly hazardous work (such as handling pyrophoric materials) and for individuals that supervise work involving ignition sources (such as bunsen burners in teaching labs). Contact ehs@sjsu.edu for more information about appropriate fire extinguisher safety training.
- If portable eyewash stations are utilized by the lab/shop, then the units must be maintained by the lab/shop supervisor. These stations are not covered under the campus-standard for plumbed eyewash stations that are maintained by university Environmental Health & Safety.
- Field researchers can request ABC fire extinguishers from university Environmental Health & Safety. Field researchers are responsible to implement their own safety shower and eyewash solutions in the field (if needed). AEDs are only available from Environmental Health & Safety for a narrow set of field activities like diving from SJSU vessels.
Biosafety Cabinets
Annual biosafety cabinet certification is coordinated by the SJSU Biosafety Officer (biosafety@sjsu.edu). Lab/shop supervisors are responsible for repair, decontamination, and recertification costs if needed. Lab/shop supervisors must inform the Biosafety Officer of any status change related to biosafety cabinets. Departments are responsible for biosafety cabinets in teaching labs.
Ventilation Engineering Controls
- Annual chemical fume hood, exhaust snorkel, dust collection systems, and paint booth certifications are completed by the College Safety Team with oversight from the SJSU Chemical Hygiene Officer.
- Facilities, Development, & Operations is responsible for maintaining the utilities that support ventilation engineering controls such as airflow, plumbing, and electrical at state properties.
- The College Safety Team and college/department technical staff are responsible for unit maintenance such as replacing light bulbs, replacing filters, and fixing sashes.
Other Safety Equipment
Lab/shop supervisors are responsible for the maintenance of other safety equipment such as laser barriers, soldering fume extractors, 3D printer enclosures, machine guards, and gloveboxes. Lab/shop supervisors are responsible for the documentation related to this safety equipment. The College Safety Team will ask about this safety equipment during lab/shop inspections and should be informed if there is any status change related to specialized safety equipment.
Personal Protective Equipment
- Departments must provide personal protective equipment for technical staff and teaching operations.
- Research lab/shop supervisors must provide the personal protective equipment that
is required for their specific research activities.
- Lab Coats:
- Disposable lab coats were the most effective solution for the following departments with labs/shops: Physics & Astronomy, Moss Landing Marine Labs, Meteorology & Climate Science, and Geology.
- Reusable lab coat laundering programs are in place for Biological Sciences and Chemistry. Contact department chairs for details.
