Abstract:

In this talk, I will discuss research on undergraduate physics students transferring from community college into bachelor's granting institutions. Approximately 13% of physics bachelors recipients began higher education at a community college; additionally, transfer students are more likely to be students of color, women, first-generation college students, and come from low-income backgrounds compared to students who began college at a bachelor's granting university. I will present work from two projects: (1) A case-study based project on trajectories of undergraduate physics students into and through a bachelor's granting university and (2) a new NSF-funded project to support physics transfer students of color through transforming bachelors granting institutions to be more transfer-receptive. In sharing nascent progress from these ongoing projects, I hope to promote dialogue with others who are interested in supporting the success of transfer students in our College.
