Classroom Spaces

Classrooms are defined as University Lecture Rooms (ULRs) or College Managed Lecture Rooms (CLECs). Per AAD Classrooms List [pdf], these spaces vary in size, furniture, technology, specialized equipment and are located in various academic buildings throughout the campus. Academic colleges and departments also manage teaching laboratories (TLABs).

Classrooms users must adhere to the CSU Free Expression and Time, Place and Manner Policy and classroom use guidelines and priorities.

SJSU employees must access the Classroom Resource Hub to review processes and timelines to reserve spaces.

Classroom Access

Building access days/hours vary and employees requiring additional room access within academic buildings can request such using the FD&O Key/Card Access Form [pdf]. Building access requires a Tower Card. To request a tower card, email myid@sjsu.edu.

University Lecture Rooms: If a room is found locked, it could take up to ten minutes for staff to arrive on site to unlock a room. To unlock a University Lecture Room, instructors should contact:

  • (408) 924-1990 on Mondays to Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • (408) 924-2222 on evenings and weekends, outside of normal business hours, call the UPD dispatch line above. UPD will route the request to the FD&O manager on call to review and respond to the reported issue.

College Managed Lecture Rooms: If unable to access, instructors should contact colleges or departments, who are responsible for managing access.

Classroom Assignments

While most laboratory or activity classes are manually assigned to college or department managed spaces, most lecture, seminar, and discussion classes are assigned to classrooms based on a collaboratively designed, automated process using a tool by Ad Astra. There are two reasons a department may request a new classroom:

  1. Instructor Accomodation. If instructor accommodations were not already pre-assigned, instructors that have any accommodation needs must submit a registration form to the Employment Accommodations Resource Center (EARC). The EARC will work directly with AS&SM to assign classes to rooms.

  2. Pedagogical. Examples of course level pedagogical reasons include a class has group work activities and the room assigned is too small to facilitate this effectively, or if technical equipment is used to provide regular demonstrations in lecture/seminar classes. After discussion with the designated College Academic Associate Dean, department chairs may approve requests for different lecture rooms for specific pedagogical reasons at the course level.
