Nourishing Communities

Nourishing Communities logo

Nourishing Communities supports Latine immigrant families through culturally sustaining nutrition education. This means we provide programs that help young people reconnect with their family values and food traditions, while also promoting eating habits that can decrease the risk of chronic disease.

Instead of focusing only on nutrients and rules of "healthy" versus "not healthy", we take a people-first approach to food. We see food as a reflection of culture, a catalyst for family bonding, and a centerpiece of community celebration culture.

Nourishing Communities programs promote health equity and cultural resilience by leveraging voices in Nutrition, Public Health, and Child Development, and by strengthening partnerships with community-based organizations to support community-led initiatives.

For Youth
  • Sobremesa, hands-on cooking activities that celebrate traditional dishes across cultures while building healthy, shame-free relationships with food. By combining cultural food knowledge with nutrition science, the program fosters pride, strengthens food literacy, and supports lifelong wellness.

Our youth programs are currently only offered through our active partnerships with schools and community organizations. If your organization is interested in partnering with us, send us an email at healthydev@sjsu.edu!
