Position Description
Student Leadership Ambassadors (SLA) will represent the student voice within the Department of Student Involvement (SI). Through knowledge sharing and working in collaboration with SI staff, SLAs will better inform SI’s work in the department’s four main areas and programs:
- Recognized Student Organizations (RSOs)
- Fraternity/Sorority Life
- Campus Programming
- Leadership Development
SLAs will contribute to SI’s ability to meet the mission of the department:
We foster a welcoming campus environment by empowering students through leadership development, active participation in student organizations, and engagement in diverse programs. These opportunities encourage a sense of belonging, personal growth, and community building, both during and beyond the university experience.
SLAs will be under the supervision of various staff members in Student Involvement based on the role they are hired into. SLAs serve as representatives of the SI department and must conduct themselves in a professional and businesslike manner at all times. Due to the nature of work (front desk coverage and program/event planning), SLAs must have the ability to maintain confidentiality, be reliable, have good communication skills, and be proactive in assisting the office staff in a variety of tasks.
Position Eligibility Requirements
- Be a current SJSU undergraduate student and enrolled in at least 12 semester units during the Fall semester.
- Be in good academic standing. Note: A minimum SJSU cumulative and semester GPA of 2.0 is considered “good academic standing.”
- Be in good judicial standing from the Office of Student Conduct and Ethical Development.
- Ability to interface and collaborate well with students, staff, faculty, and administrators
- Ability to work in a combination of typical office environment duties as well as an event work environment both indoors and outdoors.
- Be reliable, punctual, responsible, flexible, a team player, and demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to represent the department positively at all times
Position Details
General Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide customer service to all visitors and guests, including screening of calls
and visitors, deliveries, mail distribution, and general clerical work (copying, printing,
scanning, etc.)
Assist and prep for meetings and events
Attend and actively participate in staff meetings and mandatory trainings throughout the semester
Communicate effectively and regularly on an individual and group basis with Student Involvement staff and other campus departments
Maintain confidentiality as it relates to all SI business
Participate and support various campus events and initiatives as requested by Student Involvement, the Division of Student Affairs, and wider SJSU campus departments (Weeks of Welcome, Homecoming, etc.)
Other duties and projects assigned by SI professional staff
Area-Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- In addition to the general duties described above, Student Involvement Student Leadership Ambassadors will be hired into one of 5 specific roles, of which additional roles and responsibilities are described below:
Campus Programming
- Assist in the planning and execution of SI Campus Programming events, including, but not limited to, Weeks of Welcome, Commuter Appreciation Week, Homecoming, etc.
- With direction from the Campus Programming Coordinator, plan and host small-scale programs for SJSU students based on the needs and wants of the community, for identity-themed months, etc.
- Represent Student Involvement programs and services at various tabling opportunities across campus
- Develop and strategize activities, opportunities, and resources that can be implemented in Campus Programming endeavors
- Serve as a liaison to other departments to amplify the message and scope of various Campus Programming initiatives
- Assist in the organization and storage of Campus Programming supplies and resources
- Widely promote Student Involvement and Campus Programming events and services
Leadership Development
- Provide input on the development of a comprehensive leadership development program inclusive to SJSU’s diverse student population.
- Support the Leadership Development Coordinator in the execution of events for staple programs such as Leadership and Career Certificate Program, Emerging Leaders Program, Student Leadership Gala, and the National Society of Leadership and Success.
- Create and facilitate of multiple leadership workshops throughout the academic year.
- Support the development of new and innovative campus-wide leadership programs.
- Edit materials (graphics, website, print materials, etc.) to reflect current programmatic offerings by the Leadership Development Area.
- Conduct passive programming that align with the vision and goals of the Leadership Development Area.
- Assist with the branding and messaging surrounding Leadership Development Programs.
- Assist with the planning and implementation of major campus-wide programs as part of the Campus Programming & Leadership Development cluster within Student Involvement (i.e., Finals Programming, Spartan Speaker Series, Weeks of Welcome, Homecoming Week, etc.)
Fraternity and Sorority Life
- Coordinate eligibility/grade collection.
- Support Student Engagement Coordinator by providing the necessary tools to successfully advise groups (trainings, informational meetings, newsletters, policy updates/reminders, etc.).
- Assist with the facilitation of leadership development opportunities and officer transition programs for the fraternity and sorority communities.
- Support program planning and implementation for Greek letter organizations (i.e., council specific recruitment events,educational programming for Greek chapters, FSL Awards, Homecoming, etc.).
- Support other Student Engagement Coordinators in various programs and events including but not limited to student organization fairs, leadership development, recruitments, informational sessions, council/IGC meetings, mixers, etc.
- Provide program support for Students Involvement, Campus Life, and Division of Student
Affairs sponsored programs and events including but not limited to Weeks of Welcome,
Homecoming, Finals Programming, etc.
Serve as a resource for community building, wellness education, and risk management. - Work directly with Associate Director, Assistant Director (RSO) and Student Engagement Coordinators to provide support for annual RSO recognition process.
- Serve as a liaison to student organizations on the use of technology platforms for organization management
Recognized Student Organizations
- Assist the Student Engagement Coordinator and Assistant Director by providing the necessary tools to successfully advise groups (trainings, informational meetings, communications, policy updates/reminders, etc.).
- Support the review for completion of annual online California State University (CSU)
mandated training for student organization leaders
Serve on the Annual Student Leadership Gala Committee in collaboration with Student Involvement’s Leadership cluster area and other campus partners. - Support the annual student organization awards process presented at the Annual Student Leadership Gala.
- Assist in the Annual Leadership & Career Conference with the Leadership Development Coordinator and Career Center campus partners.
- Assist in serving as a liaison to student organizations on the use of technology platforms for organization management.
- Serve as a resource for community building, wellness education, and risk management
for Recognized Student Organizations
Market, promote, and oversee new organization recognition on an on-going basis. - Support program planning and implementation for recognized student organizations.
- Support other Student Engagement Coordinators in various programs and events, including but not limited to fraternity and sorority programs, leadership development, recruitments, informational sessions, mixers, etc.
- Work directly with the Associate Director, Assistant Director (RSO), and Student Engagement Coordinator for RSOs to provide support for the annual RSO recognition process.
Marketing and Social Media
- Work with all areas of Student Involvement to generate marketing materials for upcoming Student Involvement events and programs, as well as general promotional materials.
- Upkeep and add content for Student Involvement social media channels, such as Instagram, YouTube, and the SJSU SAMMY App.
- Support systems for sharing information about programs and services more widely across campus, including sharing information and resources with various campus stakeholders.
- Upkeep displayed marketing materials for Student Involvement in spaces such as bulletin boards, digital screens, etc.
- Assist with updating and refreshing information on the Student Involvement website.
- Assist with printing marketing materials and displaying around campus.
