United Sorority and Fraternity Council (USFC)
The United Sorority and Fraternity Council (USFC) at San José State University was established in 2003, seeking a more diverse cooperative existence between sorority and fraternal orders. USFC is the coordinating body for the seventeen local, regional, or national, cultural interest fraternities and sororities. The purpose of the United Sorority and Fraternity Council is to assist member sororities & fraternities in the achievement of their noble purposes, to provide a forum for the government & regulation of chapter affairs, to enrich chapter life on campus, to act as a liaison between our member chapters & the University administration by establishing a communicative network for all sororities & fraternities, and to promote unity among our chapters and the college community. While most groups recruit in fall and spring, not all groups do.

Alpha Kappa Omega Fraternity, Inc. is guided by the principles and lessons of the katipunan, sealed in the tenets of Strength, Loyalty, Pride, Wisdom and Courage. On January 21, 2001, four young and ambitious men crossed into Alpha Kappa Omega at SJSU. The Four Horsemen, as they were called, moved quickly and established the Beta Chapter on April 4, 2001.

- Gamma Zeta Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

In 1987, fifteen men came together to find what would later become Gamma Zeta Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Recognizing the difficulties facing Latinos in high education, the founders sought to create an organization aimed at developing leadership, instilling academic scholarship, and creating an environment of support that integrated Latino heritage. From their first meetings, the founders decided that the principles of their new organization would be Academic Excellence, through which they could encourage and support Latino males in higher education; Community Service, with which they could give back to the communities that shaped their lives; and the Maintenance of Latino Culture through Brotherhood, by which they saw their heritage shaping their views and personal values.

Lambda Theta Phi Latin Fraternity Incorporated, provides college students of diverse backgrounds and descents, working together to be part of a family with a mission. The mission is cultivate a spirit of brotherhood, to value an education, to promote unity among Latinos and all cultures, to be proud of and cherish our heritages, to assert roles of leadership, to develop character, to practice chivalry, and to serve mankind. In 1975, there were no Latino fraternities in existence in the United States. Lambda’s founders, as men of vision, realized there was a need to unite the Latino students, develop their leadership skills, impart upon them the value of an education, and instill in them a commitment to their community and culture.

Often referred to as “NAK”, Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, Inc. was founded on February 26, 1988 on the campus of California Polytechnic State University. Nu Alpha Kappa strives for academic excellence, works to establish a family away from home for their brothers, and spreads Latino pride everywhere they go. In 1989, the Alpha Chapter was founded at SJSU. The brothers of SJSU work to maintain the mission of the fraternity which reads, “We, NU ALPHA KAPPA, seek to unite and involve all students in a more harmonious and brotherly atmosphere through academic, social and cultural means. There is a need to interface the various backgrounds that constitute the student body of our fraternal university chapter, in order to improve relations amongst all students and the community”.

Pi Alpha Phi Fraternity, Inc. is the oldest Asian-American interest fraternity in the United States, and since its founding in 1929 at the University of California Berkeley, it has expanded with chapters at campuses throughout the nation. Later on, the Delta Chapter at SJSU was founded in 1991. The 5 pillars of the fraternity are: Academic Excellence, Asian Awareness, Brotherhood, Leadership, and Philanthropy. Brothers of this fraternity work to uphold these pillars, while being apart of the oldest active Asian-American Interest Fraternity.

Sigma Delta Alpha, Fraternity Inc. is a latino-based fraternity established at San Jose State University. Founded in 1992, the brothers of Sigma Delta Alpha continue to strive for excellence in supporting each other academically, socially, and personally. Brothers also ensure to reach out to serve and enrich the community with the latino culture and solidify the purpose of the fraternity. Sigma Delta Alpha has continued to strive to fulfill the goals envisioned by the original 18 Founding Fathers. Growing strongly at San José State University, it also continues to expand its values and ethics, and fulfill its purpose throughout prestigious universities and campuses.

Eighteen Founding Fathers established Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc. in 1986 at the University of Iowa, with the principles of brotherhood, scholarship, cultural awareness, and community service. Ten years later, in 1996, the Lambda Alpha Chapter was established at SJSU. The brothers of Sigma Lambda Beta have spread the messages of positive change and cultural understanding by setting an example of pride and wisdom in their cultures. These brothers are proud of the Latin phrase in their Fraternity shield which reads “CONGRESSI SUPERAMUS DIVISI CADIMUS” united we stand divided we fall.

Zeta Chi Epsilon was founded at San Francisco State in 1991. Just four years later, the Gamma chapter was established at SJSU. The men of Zeta Chi Epsilon are dedicated in preserving the traditions of the Fraternity and upholding the three main principles, which are Unity, Leadership, and Brotherhood. Academics, community service, and social activities are also a part of Zeta Chi Epsilon tradition.

Sisters strive to maintain the highest levels of integrity and innovation in the promotion of sisterhood, philanthropy, scholastic excellence, and Asian awareness in the community, while creating lifelong relationships. The alpha Kappa Delta Phi Charter Class at San José State University was established on April 8, 1995 by the National Board and Chapters of alpha Kappa Delta Phi. This class of 8 sisters created this sorority to promote community service, academic achievement and most importantly, a strong sisterhood bond in the University and community.

Alpha Kappa Omicron, Inc. is a Pilipino-American sorority based on the history, traditions, and culture of the Philippines. This sorority is dedicated to the development of community awareness, self-empowerment, and academic excellence. In 2011, Alpha Kappa Omicron, Gamma Colony was established at SJSU with 12 charter sisters. These sisters work persistently in preserving the history, traditions and foundation of Alpha Kappa Omicron while maintaining the importance of academic excellence, cultural value, social networking, and community service.

Lambda Sigma Gamma Sorority, Inc. is an academic, community, social, and multicultural sorority that was founded at Sacramento State University in 1986. Through the support its members offer each other, Lambda Sigma Gamma has developed a strong, safe and loving environment where friendships grow, characters build, knowledge is shared, and a multicultural sisterhood is created. The Gamma Chapter at SJSU was established in 1989, and the sisters in this chapter are proud of their sorority’s motto, "Unity Through Sisterhood, Beauty Through Diversity".

The first Latin Sorority in the nation, Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated was founded in 1975 at Kean University in Union, New Jersey. LTA is a group of women focused on improving community service, representing universal women, and promoting higher education. In 1998, here at San José State University, an interest group was formed. After a year and a half of hard work and dedication, ten lovely ladies established Beta Xi Chapter on January 19, 2000. The ten founding sisters established a chapter for several reasons. Some of these reasons being to have a support group for minority women, for community involvement, for sisterhood, and most importantly, academic excellence.

The purpose of Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc. shall be to open the doors of opportunity to Latinas in our community. The primary focus is academic excellence and meeting the needs of Latina women in higher education. Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc. also promotes the advancement of Latinas through various campus activities and community services, and provides an environment for personal growth within a unit of sisterhood. Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc.'s priorities, however, will be placed upon academic excellence and community service. Lambda Theta Nu Sorority, Inc. was founded originally as a city wide chapter on November 13, 2007 by 9 beautiful ladies. On May 3, 2010 the sorority officially became part of the San José State University campus.

Founded in 1992, Sigma Alpha Zeta Multicultural Sorority, Inc. multicultural sorority was formed to further opportunities for multicultural women in colleges and universities throughout California. The sisters of the sorority are dedicated to academic excellence, personal growth, sisterhood, and community service. Sigma Alpha Zeta women form a lasting bond of sisterhood that often continues even beyond the University environment. The Beta Chapter which was founded in 1995 in SJSU, still stands strong today. The SAZ ladies pride themselves in academic excellence, community service, and sisterhood.

Sigma Omega Phi Multicultural Sorority, Incorporated manifested its roots on April 26, 1990 at CSU Chico. Sigma Omega Phi believes in opening minds through culture, education and unity. The Delta Chapter was established at San José State University on October 16, 1999. Due to the hard work and dedication of 5 lovely ladies, the Delta Chapter has flourished. With an everlasting bond and morals formulated to withstand all obstacles, the sisters pride themselves on being the Sophisticated Few. We place a high emphasis on education and community service.

Sigma Omicron Pi offers women a supportive network of sisters to achieve academic and social growth. This sisterhood is based on four objectives: Unity, Friendship, Leadership, and Service. The tradition of lifelong friendship has prevailed for over 8 decades. Sigma Omicron Pi was established in 1930 at San Francisco State University, making the organization the first and oldest Asian American National sorority in the United States. The Gamma Chapter of Sigma Omicron Pi at San José State University was founded on June 6, 1992 by 8 Asian American women. While priding themselves on being the first Asian American interest sorority on the San José State University campus, the sisters continue to uphold the strong traditions of their sisterhood, bounded by their objectives.

Sigma Pi Alpha Sorority, Inc. is a Chicana/Latina sorority. It was founded in the Spring of 1996 at the University of California at Berkeley. In 2010 Sigma Pi Alpha sorority expanded to SJSU to fulfill that same need for women on this campus. The letters they wear represent their sisterhood, their commitment to each other and their goals. Although the sisters focus on Chicana/Latina matters, they are also concerned with issues that impact women in general. The sisterhood is made up of women with multicultural roots, who have positive energy radiating all over the world.

Sigma Theta Psi Multicultural Sorority Incorporated was the first established multicultural sorority at San José State University. Eighteen students established Sigma Theta Psi on November 13, 1991, and these women came to fill a void of multicultural awareness on their campus. They sought to create a sisterhood that would embrace and celebrate cultural diversity. In addition, they strove to promote not only diversity, but honesty, loyalty, and respect. Sigma Theta Psi is an academic and social organization, and the women in this organization recognize the endeavors of new and continuing students and are willing to assist others.
