Who to Contact if a Student is Detained

If a student is taken into custody, free legal support resources may be available, outlined in the sections below. Once you learn a student has been taken into custody, the Designated University Official should be contacted to ensure the student's academic records are maintained.

Vice President for Student Affairs and Designated University Official for Federal Immigration Activity Notification

In the event any enforcement activity leads to any kind of physical altercation, immediately call 9-1-1.

Access to Records
San José State University remains committed to protecting student data in accordance with federal and state laws and ensuring data is used solely for its intended purpose. Records are not released to a third party, including immigration enforcement officials, without the written permission of the individual in question or a signed judicial order/warrant/subpoena.

Supportive Student Services

The following are services and resources available to students throughout the academic year for assistance with basic needs and holistic wellness. All students are encouraged to use these services when needed for immigration-related concerns and other wellness support.

SJSU Cares

Students may seek support services for issues related to their well-being at SJSU Cares in the Student Success and Global Engagement suite on the west side of the Diaz Compean Student Union (enter across from the Engineering Building). SJSU Cares is available at sjsu.edu/sjsucares if you are a student experiencing housing or food insecurity, need case management, or an unforeseen economic need.  The staff in SJSU Cares will connect students to critical campus and government resources.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

Located in the Student Wellness Center, CAPS offers a safe and supportive environment for you to explore your feelings, develop coping strategies and foster personal growth. CAPS can support you in navigating this situation with services that include brief individual therapy, couples and group counseling, and referral to additional services.  CAPS also provides Same Day Services to address your most immediate concerns on a drop-in basis.  Please call (408) 924-5678 or visit sjsu.edu/wellness.  Finally, if you are facing an emergency after hours, we encourage you to visit this link for important resources.
