Stocks

These gifts offer considerable tax advantages if transferred to the Tower Foundation of SJSU before they are sold. If you have held your stocks for more than one year, you may find that your gift will provide a twofold tax benefit. First, creating an income tax deduction, and second, avoiding the capital gains tax that would have been due on their sale.

Matching Gift

Many employers offer matching gift programs. This means they’ll match your charitable donations—doubling or sometimes even tripling your impact! Please contact your company’s HR department to verify the status of your company’s matching gift program. Some companies also match gifts by retirees and/or spouses.

Planned Giving

Many Spartan alumni include SJSU in their estate plans: wills and trusts, gift annuities, retirement plans, real property and other options. Find out about increasing your income, earning valuable income-tax deductions and reducing your estate taxes.

Donor-Advised Funds

A Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) allows individuals to make charitable contributions and receive an immediate tax deduction. The funds are managed by a DAF custodian, and the donor can recommend grants to their preferred nonprofit organizations.

Qualified Charitable Distributions from your IRA

A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is a tax-efficient way for individuals who are age 70 ½ or older to make gifts directly from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA).
QCDs can count towards satisfying an individual’s Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the year, which is the minimum amount that an individual must withdraw from their IRA each year once they reach age 73.

Why We Give

Jim and Louise Dunaway
Jim and Louise Dunaway, '67

Jim Dunaway, ’67 Teaching Credential, worked as an industrial engineer before coming to San José, where he realized teaching was his true calling. The Dunaways established a charitable remainder trust that will create endowed scholarships and awards for future math teachers at San José State. “I hope that our scholarship recipients really love what they are doing and are encouraged to stay within the profession,” says Louise Dunaway. “We need good teachers — we need dedicated people. I hope that the students feel validated for all their efforts and hard work.”
