Program Learning Outcomes
What Students Will Learn
The program prepares engineers to design, develop, evaluate, and manufacture intelligent healthcare robotics systems and assistive devices for industries serving older adults, people with disabilities, and individuals recovering from injury or illness.
Students will explore the intersection of engineering, healthcare, aging, and human centered design through topics such as:
- Robotics and AI-enabled assistive technologies
- Wearable, ambient, and intelligent sensing systems
- Smart homes and aging-in-place technologies
- Human factors, ergonomics, usability, and accessibility
- Medical-device design, manufacturing, and systems integration
- FDA regulatory considerations for medical systems and devices
- Safety, ethics, privacy, equity, and responsible innovation
Graduates will be prepared for careers and leadership roles in:*
- Healthcare technology and medical-device companies (for example, Intuitive Surgical, Align Technology, Game Ready, GE Healthcare, and Johnson & Johnson)
- Robotics and artificial-intelligence industries (for example, Hello Robot, Toyota Research Institute, SafelyYou, and Inspiren)
- Rehabilitation and assistive-technology organization (for example, Ekso Bionics, Hello Robot, CTI One, and Hoveround)
- Senior-care and long-term-care systems (for example, Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health, El Camino Health, Santa Clara Valley Healthcare, and Bridage Health)
- Research, design, manufacturing, and product development (for example, Intuitive Surgical and Align Technology)
The program's guiding principle is simple: technology should expand human capability, preserve dignity and help people live with greater independence, not replace humanity.
