Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

[Key Summary for CPT]

1. You will need to submit an RCL request to ISSS if you have fewer than nine units in Fall or Spring semesters. Use the RCL Request assignment to initiate your request and submit at the SAME TIME as your CPT.

2. CPT requests are now submitted using the iSpartan link. This Canvas assignment describes the CPT submission process but has no Canvas submission. Department document files are required to be attached and submitted with the iSpartan eForm as one PDF file. If your advisor notifies you via email of missing information or errors, you must cancel your CPT application, correct the issues noted, and submit via iSpartan again.

3. Computer Engineering department policy does not allow concurrent on-campus employment and CPT internship employment.

4. Please note the ISSS duration and application windows for CPT submission. The CMPE department sets a departmental deadline for CPT applications to coincide with the last day to add classes for Fall and Spring semesters. No late add petitions for internship courses CMPE 180 and CMPE 298i will be approved in Fall and Spring. Please plan accordingly and let your potential employer know about this deadline, if appropriate, for hiring timeline purposes. In addition, the department has a limit of 12 units per semester for graduate enrollment in Fall and Spring.

Note: Please carefully follow the instructions below.

You must register for CMPE 298i before you submit your approved CPT eForm request to ISSS.

Note that ISSS has requirements for CPT that are strictly enforced. Please read the information at https://sjsu.edu/isss/current-students/employment/cpt.php? and pay careful attention to the date range for your CPT and the offer letter requirements. Your CPT request will be denied if you do not follow the ISSS CPT requirements.

By submitting a CPT request, you agree to and are bound by the Release, Hold-Harmless and Informed Consent Statement [pdf].

[Instructions to Submit CPT Approval Request on ISSS eForm]

Step 1. Complete the iSpartan eForm. Note that there are two files to upload using the iSpartan eForm described in steps 2 and 3 below. In the iSpartan eForm, for department advisor, enter Dan Harkey if you are an MS SE student, Haonan Wang if you are an MS CMPE student, and Magdalini Eirinaki if you are MS AI student. Enter the following email address (  sjsu-cmpe-isss-eforms-group@sjsu.edu ) to route your CPT request for processing. Do not enter your advisor's email address.

Step 2. Upload the official Employment Offer Letter and select it in the iSpartan eForm under the heading Upload CPT Employment Offer Letter.

Note the following information from ISSS about your offer letter:

If the offer is remote, then this should be indicated on the letter, including the address where the student will be working. The letter needs to include the following information:

  • Must be printed on company's letterhead
  • Must be dated within the last 3 months
  • Include job title
  • Include job description
  • Include employment start and end date
  • Include physical address where you will work (street number and name, city, state postal code, and suite/building number)
  • Include number of hours per week

Step 3. Create the files highlighted in bold text described below and combine them into one PDF file to attach to the application. Attach this single PDF file under the iSpartan eForm heading Upload Document Required By Your Department:

3.1. Scan your admission letter (front and back pages)

3.2. Create your unofficial transcript PDF file

3.3. Create a screen capture of your most updated MySJSU Course History as a PDF file

3.4. (If applicable) If you were admitted conditionally classified and met admission conditions by passing a subject test or taking a class outside of SJSU, create a PDF file showing the proof for completing your admission prerequisites.

3.5. Download and complete the corresponding Program of Study (POS) template for your degree program, found on assignments tab in Canvas.

Step 4.  Wait for advisor to receive, review, and approve iSpartan eform request if everything required is accurate and complete. If approved, students enroll into CMPE 298i immediately. The approved request form goes to ISSS next for their review and approval. ISSS will only start processing your paperwork after you have enrolled into CMPE 298i.

Step 5. Receive CPT approval from ISSS.  ISSS will handle SSN and I-20s.
