AE Program Policies
Progress towards the degree for entering first-time freshmen and transfer students
Mathematics: AE students must take a required math course every semester until they complete the math requirements for the major (Math 30, Math 31, Math 32, Math 33A and AE105).
Physics: Upon passing Math 30, students must take a required physics course every semester until they complete the physics requirements for the major (Phys 50, Phys 51, Phys 52).
Appeal: In cases of error or extenuating circumstances, a student, upon receiving notice from the major advisor that they failed to make required progress to degree, may petition immediately to a faculty advisor in the major and/or the AE Department Chair to appeal such an action.
Academic Probation in the AE Major
i. Students will be placed on academic probation from the AE major if any of the following occur:
a. They do not take a required math course every semester until they complete the math requirements for the major (Math 30, Math 31, Math 32, Math 33A and AE105), or
b. They do not take a required physics course every semester until they complete the physics requirements for the major (Phys 50, Phys 51, Phys 52) upon passing Math 30, or
ii. AE students on academic probation in the major must meet with an AE advisor to design a corrective action plan.
iii. Exceptions may be made for extenuating circumstances that may prevent a student from taking one of these courses. Students must meet with an AE advisor to discuss the specific situation and obtain written approval in advance not to take a math or physics class in a given semester, so they will not be put on probation.
iv. To be removed from academic probation and restored to good academic standing in the major, students must have continuous enrollment in required math and physics classes.
v. Special circumstances. Withdrawal from the University while on academic probation in the major will not result in disqualification. However, the same Major GPA requirement will apply upon re-admission to the university.
Academic Notice in the AE Major
i. Students will be placed on academic notice in the AE major if any of the following occur:
a. They do not earn a grade of "C-" or better after the first time taking any of the math or physics courses required for the AE major or AE 20 or AE30. Early Start classes (math taken the summer before starting at SJSU) shall not count towards a student's attempt at a math class. However, the BSAE degree requirement of a “C or better” still stands and students are required to repeat any math, science, or technical course in which they earn a grade of "C-".
b. They are unable to maintain a cumulative Major GPA of at least 2.0 in math, science, and AE lower division courses.
c. They are unable to maintain a cumulative Major GPA of at least 2.0 in AE upper division courses.
ii. The department will notify any undergraduate student who is subject to academic notice in the major during their required advising session in any given semester or by messaging them via their email of record in MySJSU. It is the student's responsibility to read messages from the department and be aware of their Major GPA
iii. AE students on academic notice must meet with an AE advisor to design a corrective action plan.
iv. To be removed from academic notice and restored to good academic standing in the Major, students must continue to earn a term Major GPA of 2.0 or better, every term until their cumulative Major GPA is 2.0 or better, and have continuous enrollment in required math and physics classes.
v. Special circumstances.
- If a student repeats a course for Grade Forgiveness (University Policy F08-2), the earned grade for Grade Forgiveness is the grade of record. As per F08-2, Section I.B.5, "students may repeat an individual course for Grade Forgiveness only once."
- As stated in UP F08-2, Section I.C. l when a course is repeated using "Grade Averaging," grade points and units for all attempts shall be calculated in the student's Major GPA.
- Withdrawal from the University while on academic notice in the major will not result in disqualification. However, the same Major GPA requirement will apply upon re-admission to the university.
Disqualification from the AE Major
Students will be disqualified from the AE major if they:
a. Are on academic notice and/or academic probation in the major, and...
b. Have been notified that they have been placed on academic notice and/or academic probation in the major, and...
c. Do not make adequate progress in the major for two consecutive terms (Fall & Spring) or
d. Multiple failures: fail to earn a grade of "C-" or better after taking twice any of the math or physics courses required for the AE major or AE 20 or AE30, or
e. Fail to achieve the minimum term major GPA of 2.0 during the following term.
ii. AE students disqualified under this policy will be notified by the Department that they are no longer eligible to continue in their major. Their major will be changed to Undeclared unless another major for which they are qualified is selected and approved by the new major's academic advisor.
iii. Early Start shall not be considered to disqualify a student from the major.
iv. Appeal: In cases of error or extenuating circumstances, upon receiving notice of administrative academic probation or academic notice or disqualification in the major, a student may petition immediately to a faculty advisor in the major and/or the AE department chair to appeal such an action. In the case of a negative decision, the student may appeal to the Academic Disqualification and Reinstatement Review Committee (ADRRC). After review of the petition, the Committee will make its recommendation to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies to confirm or rescind the action taken.
Reinstatement to the AE Major
a. An AE student may be reinstated to the major by petition only at the discretion of the AE Department. Students, along with a major advisor, will be required to design a corrective action plan that addresses scholastic deficiencies in the major and demonstrates that they are ready to resume their academic degree. The corrective action plan must be approved by the Advisor and/or Department Chair before the student enrolls in AE courses. Students will be reinstated to the Major upon successful completion of the corrective plan only when their Major GPA returns them to good standing in the major.
b. If the student is also disqualified from the university, they must follow university guidelines to petition for reinstatement as well as readmission or reactivation to the university, as well as these guidelines for reinstatement to the AE major.
Attendance
Attendance will not be taken during class but will be taken during lab. If you miss a class you are still responsible for any material discussed or assignments given. A large portion of each class will be used for problem solving in small groups. All students are expected to participate in class discussions and problem solving. Students who are often absent will find themselves at a disadvantage during the tests. If you miss a lab session, you will get zero score on this lab.
Electronic Devices
Cell phone use is prohibited during class/lab. Turn off or silence your cell phones, and music/media players while in class / lab. Do not answer your phone and do not text during class / lab. If you violate these policies you will be asked to leave the class / lab with subsequent loss of points. Furthermore, repeated violations and disruption of the class will be referred to the SJSU’s Judicial Affairs Officer.
Intellectual Property Rights
The intelectual property rights for any student work performed in any AE course under supervision of an AE faculty member and/or collaboration of outside agencies or companies belong to and are commonly owned by all participating parties (e.g. supervising faculty member(s), student(s), outside agency/company, etc.). It follows that any publications or patents resulting from such collaborative efforts must bear the names of all contributors, including the supervising faculty.
Teamwork
- You are required to work in teams for a number of assignments. Please make yourself available to meet and work with your teammates outside of class.
- Instructor will normally form all the teams.
- At the end of each project or team assignment, each team must submit along with their report each member's peer evaluation of the other members in a separate, sealed envelope. All peer evaluation forms must be included in the team report. If you disagree with the scores you receive from your peers, you may provide an explanation to your instructor in writing and request an individual exam on the assignment. To get full credit on a team assignment, your teammates must give you at least 85% in all areas of peer review. Otherwise, your score for this assignment will be your team's score multiplied by the average peer review score.
- If your name appears on a team paper, you are expected to be able to explain whatever answer / solution / derivation is on the paper. Failure to explain the team's answer by any individual is considered a violation of academic integrity (see Univeristy Policies below) and will result in a grade of zero for the team.
