Bio: Sonnette Anderson has more than four years of experience in higher education, primarily supporting nontraditional and working students pursuing teaching credentials, administrative credentials, and master's degrees in education. She is passionate about advancing student success through equitable advising, helping students navigate barriers to higher education, and developing academic plans that align with their personal, professional, and financial responsibilities to support persistence and degree completion.

As a nontraditional student herself, Sonnette began her educational journey at Modesto Junior College before transferring to California State University, Stanislaus, where she earned a bachelor's degree in psychology. While completing her undergraduate studies, she began her higher education career at Teachers College of San Joaquin, working at the information desk and assisting prospective students with program information. Through this experience, she discovered a passion for helping students understand complex program requirements through clear, accessible communication and found fulfillment in supporting students as they took the next step in their educational journeys.

After serving in several roles at Teachers College of San Joaquin, Sonnette earned a master's degree in higher education with a concentration in college counseling and advising. Her advising philosophy is grounded in building meaningful relationships with students, understanding their unique experiences and goals, and providing individualized guidance that empowers them to succeed both academically and personally.

Q&A

1. What was your favorite class in undergrad?

My favorite class in undergrad was my English 50 course at Modesto Junior College. This course introduced me to critical thinking skills and truly helped me expand my worldview. We read “The Alchemist” and “The Four Agreements” in this course which are still two of my favorite books to this day. I love how the professor used real-world scenarios to help us reflect and engage with the course content. This course helped me feel confident in my collegiate writing skills and ability to succeed!

2. What are some of the places you have traveled to?

My recent travels have been to Hawaii, Nashville, Denver, and Seattle! I visit San Diego and Las Vegas often. Most of my out of state travels are to attend concerts, I love attending them and will make a trip to a new place to go to one. I have a goal to visit at least two new states a year, and will be making my first travels out of the country later this year.

3. What is your piece of advice for incoming students?

To take this journey as a college student one day at a time, and do not rush the process. There is something beautiful about the experience and being able to reflect back on how it shaped you into the person you are today. Take advantage of the opportunities presented to you, as well as the relationships you create with others who are willing to help you and cheer you on!
