Message from the Chair
Welcome to the Chemical and Materials Engineering (CME) Department at San Jose State University. The Chemical Engineering and Materials Engineering programs were established in 1953 and 1957, respectively, and these two dynamic engineering programs have enjoyed long standing synergistic collaborations with each other. Our strong ties with our partners in the surrounding Silicon Valley/San Francisco Bay Area and government agencies have resulted in jobs, scholarships, and internships, for our students, as well as senior projects and research activities for our students and faculty.
The Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET)-accredited B.S. ChE and MatE degree curricula prepare our students for careers in a variety of industries, as well as for advanced degree studies in academia. Our faculty and staff are committed to implementing the most effective practices for student success and lifelong learning, and we encourage students to work together and to utilize all the resources available on campus. The M.S. ChE and MatE degree programs, open to students from varied science and related engineering undergraduate majors, and offered primarily in the evening for the convenience of working professionals, provides curriculum and research with areas of specialization that lead to rewarding careers in industry, government agencies, and the pursuit of more advanced academic studies.
I invite you to take a few moments to explore the webpages of the Chemical and Materials Engineering curricula, research activities, and department events to get an idea of the exciting opportunities waiting for you both while you obtain your degree, and later in your career solving real world problems. We have an Open House each semester where potential students can visit our department and interact with our faculty and students. We also invite interested alumni, lecturers, and research partners to share with us opportunities for collaboration. Please do not hesitate to contact me or any of our faculty if you would like to learn more information or to schedule a visit.
Thank you.
