Local Government Relations
San José State is one of the few true urban campuses in the 23-campus CSU system. Being in the downtown of the tenth largest city in the country, only one block away from City Hall, means San Jose State is both an anchor institution in the and also one of the largest suppliers of talent to the region. Our impact on the community is far and wide.
CGR leads the University’s interactions with City and County leadership. Cultivating a stronger relationship means that both sides are able to maximize economic development, attract and retain top talent, and celebrate the vibrancy that comes with a large college community. We facilitate meetings, events, and introductions.
Annual Events
Great cities need great universities and that’s what we have here in San Jose. Celebrating the university/city relationship is a top priority because intentional collaboration leads to elevating underserved communities, maximizing economic impact, and resolving conflicts that arise. Here, we do that throughout the “SJSU Loves SJ” campaign. This joint campaign celebrates this great city. It focuses on City Hall, the downtown, and and the University’s annual events.
- Flag raising: On the first Monday after the start of the academic year, City Hall hosts a flag raising ceremony and flies the SJSU flag.
- Homecoming: City Hall lights up the tower and rotunda in blue and gold
- SJSU Loves SJ annual breakfast: university, city hall, and community leaders are recognized and joint projects celebrated
