BS in Aviation

The BS in Aviation (BSA) prepares student for careers in the aviation industry and provides four specializations:

• Aviation Management prepares students to work in either a public or private airport or a general aviation company while earning a Business Management Minor.
• Flight Operations designs for those students who wish to work in the operations side for commercial and private airlines.
• Professional Flight prepares students for careers as commercial pilots in airline, corporate, charter, or other flying-related professions. This degree requires FAA certification, which has significant additional costs not included in tuition.
• Maintenance Management is a 2+2 program for students from local community colleges who have completed an FAA-accredited Airframe and Powerplant (A/P) License. A community college student should be able to transfer almost all of their aviation maintenance courses and complete their BS degree requirements at SJSU in Maintenance Management.

Mission

The mission of the BS degree program in Aviation is to provide students with opportunities to develop both in-depth knowledge and hands on experience in aviation technology, operations, and management for success in positions in flight operations, air traffic management, transportation management, and management of aviation maintenance operations.

Program Learning Outcomes

• Communicate effectively with a range of audiences using written and oral communication skills
• Function effectively on a team, whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
• Recognize professional and ethical responsibilities in aviation, considering the impact of solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
• Identify, formulate, and solve problems by applying science, physics, and mathematics to aviation-related disciplines
• Describe the principles of aircraft design, performance and operating characteristics, and the maintenance of aircraft and associated systems
• Evaluate aviation safety and the impact of human factors on safety
• Discuss the impact on aviation operations of international aviation law and applicable national aviation law, regulations and labor issues
• Acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies

The BS in Aviation programs are covered by the university-wide Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation.
