PE Requirement Exceptions
If you're an undergraduate student at SJSU and still need 1–2 activity units to meet the PE requirement (University Policy S14-11 [pdf]), you may:
- Substitution: Request to substitute a PE activity course not currently listed as PE.
- Waiver: Apply for a waiver due to documented extenuating circumstances that prevent you from completing the requirement.
- Challenge: Demonstrate your skills and knowledge to fulfill 1 or 2 units.
For details on how to challenge a course, contact Dr. Seung Ho Chang at seungho.chang@sjsu.edu.
What to Include in Your Petition
- Personal Statement – Explain why you're requesting an exception
- Supporting Documents – Syllabus, course descriptions (in English), medical forms, etc.
- Transcripts – From the school where you took the course (unofficial is OK)
- PE Requirement Petition Form [DocuSign]
Missing info = automatic denial.
Important Notes
- Online PE classes are available at SJSU and community colleges. Needing to avoid in-person classes is not a valid reason for a waiver.
- You can meet the PE requirement by:
- Two different 1-unit (or less) activity courses
- One 2+ unit activity course
- Intercollegiate Athletics (1 unit per sport)
- KIN 1 (Adapted Physical Activity)
- Approved ADT with PE waiver
- Military training credit
- Major-specific waivers (check Exceptions for University Graduation Requirements)
