SVCGS presented a cybersecurity session, with Trend Micro, at CommUniverCity's Rocketship to a group of elementary and middle school students. We featured speakers to discuss the startup ecosystem from a global perspective and the associated government sponsored efforts in Silicon Valley. Our audience learned the underlying reason of Silicon Valley's strategic importance for innovators and entrepreneurs around the world. Dr. Georg Fuerlinger, Head of Austrian Trade Commission spoke on the topic, “Connecting Austria and Silicon Valley in Business, Science and Technology”. (2021.4.8) Emily Ng, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in San Francisco (HKETO-SF) shared the city's support measures in promoting innovation and technology development in Hong Kong, inclusing its smart city initiatives. The first sesssion featured Silicon Catalyst, a Silicon Valley incubator. The second session we had Dalus Capital, a perspectives from investors in Latin American. The third session offered a panel from an Asian perspective, with panelists, including a faculty into transnational entrepreneurship research, a Berkeley Skydeck advisor specialized in SE Asia and a local serial tech entrepreneur. The series ends with a session at INCmty (8th edition of the largest entrepreneurship festival in Latin America).
SVCGS hosted a faculty exchange between San Jose Staté University and Tecnológico de Monterrey (Mexico) regarding online teaching.
Faculty panelists shared the transition to online teaching in response to the pandemic and highlighted their vision about future digital learning. (2020.9.18)

Many students from our global partners, originally planned to visit SJSU during the summer, enjoyed the opportunity to learn from Silicon Valley experts, safely from their homes during the pandemic. 400+ from Asia attended the first session by Joel Ebrahimi of Palo Alto Network. His lecture title was 'The Future Of Cyber Security Through Automation.'

The 10th Annual NICE Conference was held in the week of November 18-22 in Phoenix, AZ. SVCGS, in partnership with Silicon Valley Big Data & Cybersecurity Center, highlighted the partnership effort in promoting cybersurity here and beyond. One of our partners, Hong Kong Electronics and Technologies Association co-presented at the conference session the Innovate For Future STEM competition. The talk included SJSU's partnership with industry (IBM, Trend Micro, Optortun, Splunk, Lockheed Martin etc.), school districts(through CyberSpartans), California higher education through CyberAware Day (UC Merced / Ohlone College), municipalities through non profit (Adaptable Security) and other global partners.
NICE Conference is an annual convening of community members and thought leaders from education, government, industry, and non-profits to explore ways of developing a skilled cybersecurity workforce ready to meet the challenges of the future. The event provides an opportunity to signal NICE strategic directions and priorities, and a forum to showcase best practices. This event is supported by the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE), a program of the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the U.S. Department of Commerce, under a Cooperative Agreement (Award# 70NANB18H025).
2019 CyberAware Day was held on November 13, 2019 at SJSU Student Union.
The 2019 event featured a panel of cybersecurity leaders representing various disciplines. It ranges from multinational company to defense contractor to financial industry, from startup CEO to chief legal officer to security engineer. The organizers and sponsors intended to share with SJSU students about the broad range of opportunities available in Cybersecurity.

HKETA Youth’s STEM Club is organizing an annual STEM competition: “Innovate for Future” on 16th Nov, this year. Innovate for Future is an open competition to inspire young secondary school students in Hong Kong to build products to solve real life problems through idea to prototype development. Our theme of this competition is “Society” – Smarter Living, Smarter Schools, and Smarter City. In this competition, students will demonstrate an innovative idea and build a product prototype to solve problems in the society. Competition will provide mentorship coaching and support during hardware and software prototype development before final pitch.
This competition is supported by our international partner, San Jose State University (SJSU) Silicon Valley Center for Global Studies (SVCGS). The final champion will have the opportunity to submit the project for a SJSU global program, such as Summer in Silicon Valley.
SVCGS hosted visitors from Korean national agencies for cybersecurity learning (2019.8.23)
A delegation of privacy and compliance directors from the Korean national agencies visited SJSU to learn about cybersecurity best practice in research administration on August 23, 2019.
The agencies represented included Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety, Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science, Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources, Korea Institute of Science and Technology, Korea Institute of Nuclear Nonproliferation And Control, National Research Foundation of Korea, Korea Institute of Human Resources Development in Science and Technology.
SJSU faculty members, Dr. Young Park (Computer Engineering) and Dr. David Schuster (Psychology), shared their respective experience in cybersecurity research. Industry advisors from Splunk, a leading cybersecurity company, presented various best practice. Another security architect, Dr. Sung Lee, from Intel highlighted a large corporation approach in security operations. National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Deputy Director Bill Newhouse provided a pre-recorded tutorial regarding the NICE framework.
SJSU is designated a Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense by the National Security Agency.

Attend the keynote lectures and join the panel discussion on the emerging field of Data Science. The goal is to discuss the topic from a wide range of perspectives, including technological, economic and societal challenges. The speakers will present various international views on the topic and address the impact of the new EU data protection regulation on data science activities. International representatives from both academia and industry will contribute to the panel discussion, forming a holistic view based of various forms of data, such as images, text and numeric data.
