Requesting a Letter of Recommendation
If you would like to request a letter of recommendation (LOR) from me, please keep the following in mind:
- I want to write strong LORs that can speak positively about your potential for the position you are applying for. I generally will not write LORs for students who have only taken courses with me, unless they have engaged with me in a meaningful way (e.g., through class participation or office hours) that allowed me to get to know their professional potential.
- It is best to give me at least one month notice before the LOR is due. I may decline requests with shorter notice.
- If you are planning ahead (at least one semester), consider doing an individual study (NuFS 180) or research project with me after you review my faculty profile and guide to joining my research group. Reach out to me by email if my work aligns with your interests.
- If you are requesting that I fill out a reference form or for me to be a reference contact for a position/job, please indicate that in your initial message to me.
- If I agree to write an LOR for you, I will request additional information from you to streamline the process (e.g., statement of purpose, curriculum vitae, etc.).
To request an LOR from me, please send me an email with the following information:
- In the subject line, "Request for a Letter of Recommendation"
- Your full name
- Your SJSU student ID number (if applicable)
- How you know me
- The position you are applying for
- Type of recommendation requested (e.g., letter, form, reference, etc.)
- The due date for the recommendation
Note: Do not send me attachments in this initial email. I will request additional information/documents if I agree to write an LOR for you.
