When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… the location of each building on campus. My community college was not too big and most of my classes were in the same area, so I thought it was the same at SJSU. I did not search location of building of my classes. During the first week, I struggled to find my classrooms, so I was late almost all classes in the first day.
My best strategy for college success is… to Work Hard - Play Hard. Work Hard to make sure to get a good academic result and Play Hard to stay connected with friends and experience college life.

When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… the parking situation during the first week or so of school. I would recommend the first week of school to be dropped off by a family member or take a Lyft/Uber. Around the second-third week of school, the parking situation gets a little better, and then you can drive to school.
My best strategy for college success is… to take breaks and take care of yourself. Fuel your body with healthy food, give yourself some meditation time, sleep well, go on walks, and enjoy nature. These small things will not only increase your productivity but will also help you feel more balanced, allowing you to tackle academic challenges!

During my second year, my friends met regularly at the library as well as worked in the Art Building's Pencil Test Lab. It helps a lot to have a space that encourages studying and community.
My best strategy for college success is… make time not only to study and work on projects, but also put time to socialize with classmates. Getting to know your peers will improve your mental health as well as build a network of people to study with.

Additionally, making a positive impression on professors by engaging in class and attending office hours can lead to mentorship opportunities and open doors to future academic and professional success.
My best strategy for college success is… staying organized and proactive. Managing deadlines, balancing my coursework, and networking with as many people as possible has been of utmost importance to me. Building relationships with professors and classmates has also been a game-changer—it’s amazing how much you can learn by asking questions and collaborating. Lastly, taking advantage of campus resources, like tutoring centers and workshops, has helped me stay focused and confident in my studies.

When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… that a lot of the people you'll meet here are super nice and friendly. I was able to meet a lot of my friends by getting involved in clubs and it's made my daily school life so much more fun! I really recommend that everyone try to get involved whether it's through clubs, socials, or greek life because you're going to meet so many awesome people.
My best strategy for college success is… getting organized. I personally love using Google Calendar since I'm able to keep track of all my responsibilities on one platform! Whether it's keeping track of when I have classes or if I have any club or work meetings, Google Calendar is my go-to app. Plus the ability to use so many different colors makes it so much easier to categorize different groups. I also like to use a platform called "Notion" to keep track of my assignments since I have to manually enter any assignments from Canvas which helps make me aware of what I have to do in the near future.

For example, the Writing Center at the MLK Library, Handshake, more obscure health services and events hosted by the Wellness Center, and subscriptions covered by SJSU like Kanopy and free access to the New York Times.

On a more serious note, I really wish I had known about all the amazing resources available for students. There are so many helpful options, like free tutoring, workshops, and career services. And don’t forget about the SAMMY app—it’s like a little survival guide for navigating life at SJSU and connecting with fellow students!
My best strategy for college success is… keep that caffeine flowing, believe in yourself, stay curious, and definitely befriend someone who always checks the syllabus—they’re like gold! And don’t forget to enjoy the learning journey—seriously, it can be a blast!

When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… about the rigor of the project-based learning approach. While I think it is a wonderful way to ensure students understand the material, it was definitely a bit jarring as I was not at all prepared for such an environment.
My best strategy for college success is… keep on top of your work. Keep a calendar, a to-do list, and know all your due dates. Do not cram your work all into one day when it's assigned and don't cram it all before the due date. Spread it all out over time. This way you can finish these assignments with more focus and more purposefully, so as to truly practice and understand the material. Don't forget to take breaks as well, you can't ever hope to work at full capacity if you burn out and never recover.

My best strategy for college success is… to have a balance between school, work, and free time. Planning ahead and following a schedule helped me balance all of them. This helped prevent my mental health from being overworked.

At these places, you can find a community of people you can relate to and be yourself while taking a break from academics. I recommend that all new students whether frosh or transfer reflect on their interests and passions to get involved in something they enjoy so that they can make the most out of their college experience.
My best strategy for college success is… effective time management. The best way to achieve this is to create a planner whether it's Google Calendar or an agenda and mapping out the class times, times to study and do homework, as well as free time or any other tasks that need to be done throughout the week. Before I did this, I was overwhelmed that I had to memorize all my classes and homework and I didn't set enough time for myself to study, but when I used a planner it changed everything and I was able to get all my assignments done on time.

When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… that Peer Connections offered free help for almost any subject that I could be having trouble with. Instead of trying to figure out everything on my own, Peer Connections offers help from other students that can really improve my learning.
My best strategy for college success is… to always ask for help. Although many times it can be discouraging to not be able to do things individually, asking for help can lead to widening one's perspective, as well as making new connections with others.

When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… how important it is to communicate with your professors. Everybody will struggle with at least one class or multiple in their college journey. Sometimes as hard as you try, you may not receive the results you want. However, being open and honest about these struggles with your professors can really save your efforts. Ultimately, everybody wants to see you succeed and if you are putting your best foot forward and being proactive, it will certainly not go unnoticed.
My best strategy for college success is… find a balance and prioritize. Remember while academics are important, they are not everything. At the same time, while a social life is necessary, good performance in school is our responsibility. Above all, physical and mental health should never be compromised. Keeping everything in a good balance will ensure success and highest productivity.

When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… how competitive my major (pre-nursing) would be. I was surprised to find out that almost everyone was working really hard for their 4.0. When I would be studying for midterms or finals, I first found myself comparing how much time I spent studying to those around me. If you find yourself in the same situation as me where you are constantly comparing yourself, my tip for you is to remember that everyone learns at different speeds and ways, and it's important to remember that what works for you can be different than what works for the people around you.
My best strategy for college success is… have fun! It's very easy for you to burn yourself out if you don't enjoy your time. Having genuine curiosity and interest in what you learn about will help you succeed in your studies. Aside for your studies, make sure you take time to do things you love like your hobbies or going out with your friends. Enjoy your time at SJSU!

My best strategy for college success is… staying focused and keeping a well organized agenda/calendar! Without it, I wouldn't have survived undergrad.

When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… to use MyScheduler to schedule classes, avoid taking gaps between classes that are more than two hours long, and to fully know what my passions were so I could've switched majors earlier. Always bring your charger. Talk to your advisor at least two times a semester even if you think everything is going fine (they always catch something!). Try to get dropped off at school/go at least one hour early during the first week because parking is crazy. Try not to buy brand new textbooks.
My best strategy for college success is… never cram! It saves a lot of stress in the long run to study maybe 3 days before and review the day before an exam. Know how you like to learn (ex. visually? use diagrams). Talk to your advisor at least two times a semester to make sure you're on track and not missing anything. Ask the professor if lecture slides are posted/recorded or if you can audio record.

When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… to talk to your peers and professors! It can be very easy to feel isolated in a classroom and on a campus full of people you don't know, especially if you have anxiety, but every person is a wealth of information and connection waiting to happen if you reach out.
My best strategy for college success is… put everything in your calendar! Having every assignment, exam, and meeting visible in one place helped me stay organized.

My best strategy for college success is… meeting as many people and taking advantage of all the free campus resources. I try to join clubs and honor societies with students with the same major to make lasting connections. All the free campus resources have allowed me to greatly improve my resume and develop so much professionally.

When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… to use the Sammy App more often to explore different clubs and learn about the various events on campus, as well as to explore the library more for their interesting exhibits and useful resources. I also wish I knew earlier that there are so many resources in the Student Wellness Center. Students can receive up to 8 free personal counseling sessions per year through CAPS. There are also various group sessions students can register for free, such as for stress management. Students can also make reservations for study spaces, light therapy, massage chairs, etc., and they have tons of other wellness resources listed on their website.
My best strategy for college success is… to write on a planner the tasks I need to do each day so I don't get overwhelmed. I also believe that the most important thing is to take breaks and eat decent meals during studying in order to stay motivated.

When I started at SJSU, I wish I had known… how to get involved and how to utilize resources on campus. My freshman year was twice as hard as it could’ve been if I had only used on campus resources such as Peer Connections and got involved in extracurriculars/events to meet other students and find my own support system.
My best strategy for college success is… to organize your tasks for the day. College itself can be overwhelming even without assignments or finals, so it’s important to not stack things on top of each other and to give yourself enough time to get everything done.
