Dr. Robert Chapman Wood studies large-scale innovation and creation of reliable, useful large technology systems. His research examines how leaders have overcome inertia and made innovation work, sometimes creating dramatic improvements for society. His research has appeared in Harvard Business Review, MIT Sloan Management Review, Industrial and Corporate Change, Technology Review, and Strategy & Leadership. Wood teaches Strategic Management, Global Management, and Strategic Thinking. Dr. Wood is a housing activist who is chairman of the Housing Committee of the California Faculty Association, San Jose State chapter. He believes government actions and political decisions have caused greater San Jose’s housing crisis and such actions must change. At the same time, he urges the city – which has a weak business tax base – to seek the same kind of state support that cities in other states get to enable them to permit housing. Prior to his doctoral studies, Wood was a journalist for more than 20 years. His work appeared in such publications as Forbes, the Financial Times of London, and the New York Times. He is a former associate editor of Inc. magazine. Much of Wood’s journalism dealt with Asia and with Asian-influenced management techniques. Before coming to San Jose, Wood was a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard Business School in the Program on Organizational Change. He completed his doctorate in Management Policy and Strategy at Boston University, where his thesis dealt with how companies begin innovating effectively.
