Disqualification and Reinstatement
I. Academic Notice
A student will be placed on major/ Academic Notice the first time they need to submit the “Petition for a Repeat Exception”. This applies to all degree requirements, including lower division, upper division, and GE courses. If a petition is required due to a student withdrawing from one or more prior courses, the student may not be placed on academic notice.
Students will be notified of Academic Notice status by email and/or during the advising session. Students on departmental academic notice are strongly advised to take a limited number (at most 2) of technical courses in order to get back on track as soon as possible.
II. Academic Disqualification (DQ)
Students on Major Academic Notice will be disqualified from ME and assigned “undeclared” status under either of the following conditions:
Unsatisfactory Term GPA:
Earning a SJSU term GPA below 2.0 in either Fall or Spring semester while on Academic
Notice.
Failing a course that leads to another submission of “Petition for a Repeat Exception”
III. Reinstatement after Disqualification
Students who are disqualified from the Mechanical Engineering major will be reassigned to the Undeclared major. To be considered for major reinstatement into the Mechanical Engineering program, they must meet the following conditions:
1. Requirements
To qualify for reinstatement consideration, the following conditions must be met:
Unit and Time Requirement:
Complete a minimum of 12 units (at SJSU through Open University or regular session)
within no more than two (2) semesters.
Minimum GPA:
Achieve a 3.0 GPA or higher in SJSU coursework taken after DQ
Course Selection:
At least 75% of the units must be technical courses required for ME major.
Grades in GE and American Institutions courses beyond the 25% will not be included
into the calculation of the SJSU GPA used for reinstatement.
In this context, ENGR 100W is considered as a GE course.
The course selection must be pre-approved by the department chair.
Grade Standards:
Earn a grade of B or better in all courses at SJSU previously receiving a grade of D, F, or WU (collectively referred to as “DFW” courses) in their most recent attempt.
2. Petition Process
After meeting the above requirements:
The student may submit a Petition for Reinstatement to the Major, including transcripts
of completed Open University coursework.
The Department Chair will review petitions on a case-by-case basis.
