Computational Linguistics

Computational linguistics involves the analysis of languages and linguistic phenomena, as well as the production of language, by way of computer-based models. Our interdisciplinary programs will prepare you for a variety of positions. Upon graduation, you will have competency in programming, algorithms and data structures, advanced mathematics, linguistic theories of sound and grammar, and computational analysis of natural language phenomena. You will also master existing software solutions and toolkits widely used in the industry. You will expertly evaluate existing solutions to linguistic problems, as well as design and implement new solutions.

Our interdisciplinary curriculum emphasizes state-of-the-art techniques as well as the theoretical foundations of computational linguistics. A solid linguistics and Computer Science combination will allow you to innovate in these emerging areas and set yourself apart from software engineers and machine learning experts. Based in the heart of Silicon Valley, SJSU is especially well situated as a place where graduates in computational linguistics can venture into the IT work world. Nearby companies such as Google, Facebook, and LinkedIn routinely hire and use graduates informed by computational linguistics. 

The Department of Linguistics and Language Development is proud to offer three programs in computational linguistics:

  • a Bachelor's of Science in Computer Science and Linguistics
  • a Master's of Science in Computational Linguistics
  • an 18-unit certificate

The BS and the MS are joint programs between LLD and the Department of Computer Science.

Application Directions to the MS program:

  1. apply via Cal State Apply.
  2. In addition, submit two letters of recommendation (academic preferred, though professional also permitted) via email to the computational linguistics coordinator Dr. Jon Rawski.
  3. International students are expected to take a language proficiency exam.
    • The TOEFL cutoff score for the Internet-based test is 90 (577 on the paper-and-pencil; 235 on the computer-based test).
    • The minimum IELTS score is 7.0
    • the minimum Pearson Test score is 68.
  4. No other tests (e.g. GRE) are required.
