Engage

The College of Humanities & the Arts welcome students and community members to explore the many ways our College supports and promotes the power of the arts and humanities.  Centrally embracing goals of SJSU's Transformation 2030 "Engage and Educate" and "Connect and Contribute," the Humanities and Arts in Action illustrates the vibrant teaching, learning, and connecting with the community and other arts institutions that define our College.

By connecting course activities and engaging surrounding communities our faculty offer:

  • A way to leverage differences to fuel innovation and demonstrate curiosity, resilience, and tenacity.
  • A way to build on lived expertise of the surrounding community.
  • A way to create global awareness and an understanding of culture and context for facilitating interactions between disciplines.
  • A way to model amplifying community voices and histories that might not otherwise be heard.
  • An opportunity to transform conversations about environmental grand challenges and break down divisions between humanities, arts, social, and natural sciences.
How do I find out about events?

Students can follow all College events, watch for the Dean's Monday Mailer, ask faculty members about events that link to their coursework, subscribe to the Hammer Theatre newsletter, and sign up for the Center for Literary Arts alerts

Community members can subscribe to the Dean's Monday Mailer, follow the SJSU Calendar here, subscribe to the Hammer Theatre newsletter, and sign up for the Center for Literary Arts alerts

How do I participate in events?

Students should ask their faculty what events are coming up in which they can attend and/or participate, such as music, dance, and theatre performances, or events on Sustainable Futures, Social Justice and Racial Equity, Borderlands, and Deep Humanities & Arts.

Community members are encouraged to attend and engage in our performances, our lectures, and other College events.

What will I learn?

Students will see how integrated their learning experiences are, especially through our College public programming opportunities. They will also be able to review the work of their peers, watch conversations about urgent news, engage with communities surrounding SJSU through performing arts, visual arts, languages, literature, translations, and creative writing.

How will I benefit?

Community members can participate in walking tours of public art, map their historical and cultural histories, contribute their stories about sheltering-in-place in addition to being invited to enjoy dance, music, and theatre performances and experience a diverse set of voices at literary readings, lectures, and discussions that engage their culture, histories, and voices.
