Season's Greetings from the Office of Research

As we approach the end of the fall 2022 semester and close out the year, Research Development is continuing to work hard to assist you with your research, scholarship, and creative activity (RSCA) goals. Please note that several exciting opportunities will be coming in early 2023, from new funding avenues for students, to a series of workshops to support faculty researchers.
I would like to bring to your attention a few funding opportunities that are available to student researchers with deadlines in early 2023. First is the $3,500 Research and Innovation Student RSCA Fellowship. This program supports undergraduate and graduate students and provides a $500 honorarium to their faculty mentors. Funds from this program are intended for student wages and RSCA-related travel. Participants will join a cohort with workshops conducted by the Office of Research Development, which will include training on broader RSCA issues such as ethics, diversity, and presentation skills. Applications are due February 10, 2023.
The campus deadline for the CSU-wide Student RSCA Competition is also February 10, 2023. This competition provides an opportunity for RSCA-active students to present their work and gain feedback from an SJSU-expert panel. SJSU finalists will compete for funding at the CSU system-wide competition to be held April 28–29 at San Diego State University. The competition spans all disciplines (broken into nine categories), and is open to graduate and undergraduate students.
Please also encourage your students to explore both the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) and the McNair Scholars Program. These programs provide other avenues of funding for student RSCA, and offer mentoring for students with a financial need, who are first-generation college students, or are members of a traditionally underrepresented group in graduate education.
If you are a principal investigator, or you are planning to lead a research project, we encourage you to attend all four sessions of the RSCA Administration Training. As an incentive for your participation, you will receive $500 added to your SJSURF RSCA account. More details are included in the section below.

RSCA Administration Training for Principal Investigators
The Workshop Series Begins February 1, 2023

The four-part workshop series presented by team members from Research Development (RD), Research Compliance (RC), and the SJSU Research Foundation | Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) will equip you with the knowledge you will need to successfully navigate the process and efficiently manage your research and creative activities. Whether you have already received a grant, or you are planning a proposal, there are many things to know to be able to design, plan, and manage your personal RSCA within the context of San José State University.
The series will include the following: (1) planning your lab or RSCA space, as well as mentoring and hiring students; (2) contract negotiations; (3) compliance and ethical issues; and (4) managing your grant in compliance with all applicable regulations.
Attend all four virtual workshops to receive a certificate of completion and $500 added to your SJSURF RSCA account.

Save the Date — CSU STEM-NET Conference March 2023

The Office of Research and the Office of the Provost are pleased to support the travel cost of up to ten faculty to attend the CSU-wide STEM-NET in-person conference — Becoming More than the Sum of our Parts. The meeting will be held at Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday, March 16, and Friday, March 17, 2023.
The STEM-NET conference is designed to respond to system and state goals, to identify specific actions, including policy modifications the sharing of best practices, networking, and growing sponsored program activities. The conference is intended to broaden awareness of STEM-NET in the CSU system, and its role in catalyzing and facilitating collaborations across campuses. System and state goals include increasing STEM enrollment, eliminating equity gaps, increasing graduation rates, decreasing time to graduation, promoting, and delivering equity and success for all, and responding to funding opportunities.
Interested faculty must be nominated by their college dean. Nominations should be submitted to the Office of Research at officeofresearch@sjsu.edu by January 11, 2023. Please note that a nomination does not equate to acceptance. The Office of Research will confer with the nominating deans prior to finalizing SJSU's list of 10 participants. Please email the Office of Research with questions about the nomination process.

New Time Saving Feature in Pivot-RP
|

Pivot-RP recently introduced the
Dismiss Opportunity feature designed to save users time by hiding or "dismissing" opportunities that have already been reviewed. You can now select
Dismiss on the search results page to remove opportunities from your results. Dismissed opportunities will be removed from your current result list, and they will be hidden from future results. When you
select Dismiss Opportunity, a warning message will indicate that these opportunities will be hidden from future search results.

Important Changes for NSF Grants.
For proposals submitted on or after January 30, 2023, the National Science Foundation has introduced new requirements for the information that must be provided on several key documents. A few examples of major changes are listed below, but please refer to the
NSPM-33 Implementation Guidance for a matrix of activities and relationships that must be disclosed to NSF.
- Biosketch: Senior personnel must identify all current domestic or foreign professional and academic appointments outside of the individual's academic, professional, or institutional appointments at the proposing organization, whether or not remuneration is received, and whether full-time, part-time, or voluntary.
- Current and Pending / Other Support:
- Consulting that falls outside of an individual’s appointment/agreement.
- Startup companies based on IP not licensed from SJSU.
- Travel supported/paid by an external entity to perform research activities with an associated time commitment.
- In-kind contributions (e.g., office/laboratory space, equipment, supplies, or employees) not intended for use on the project/proposal being proposed and have an associated time commitment.
- Facilities, Equipment, and Other Resources: Students, or visiting scholars who are supported by an external entity, and whose research activities are intended for use on the project/proposal being proposed.
- Significant Financial Interests: Includes venture or other capital financing.
NSF has also expanded the training for Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR), which will now be called Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (RECR). While SJSU has always required that undergrads, grad students, postdocs, faculty, and other senior personnel supported by NSF funds must complete training in ethical research practices, as of July 2023, this training will also be required to include mentor and mentorship training. RCU will be providing supplemental training materials that meet this requirement in early 2023, so watch this space!
New NIH Data Management and Sharing Requirement

DMPTool, provided by the California Digital Library is available to guide you through the process of writing a DMS Plan. This free service provides writing prompts, templates, and samples that meet the DMS Plan requirements of dozens of federal and non-federal sponsors, including NIH. You may also use this tool to share your drafts and work collaboratively with colleagues.

If you have proposals that are due during this time period, please contact your Pre-Award specialist as soon as possible to ensure that your proposals are submitted by the sponsor's required due date. Also, if you have Finance and Accounting or Human Resources matters that may require attention during that time, please contact the appropriate member(s) of those teams as soon as possible for assistance. The Research Foundation will re-open Tuesday, January 3, 2023.

Upcoming Changes for NSF Proposal Submissions
While investigators have always been responsible for generating their own biosketch, current and pending, and other support documents for National Science Foundation (NSF) proposals. Please note that for proposals submitted on or after January 30, 2023, investigators will also be required to individually certify the accuracy and veracity of these documents. False representations may be subject to prosecution and liability pursuant to, but not limited to, 18 U.S.C. §§287, 1001, 1031 and 31 U.S.C. §§3729-3733 and 3802.
As of October 2023, you must have a SciENcv account to complete the NSF Biosketch and Current and Pending / Other Support Forms. Please note that you can save yourself time and effort by linking your SciENcv account to a pre-existing National Institutes of Health eRA Commons, NSF, or National Center for Biotechnology Information accounts. If you would like to get an early start, NSF has prepared a Using SciENcv Frequently Asked Questions document to assist you in setting up your account.

Reminder — New Supplier Request Form is Now Required for Supplier Transactions
Suppliers must be set up in the SJSU Research Foundation (SJSURF) system before purchases can be made from the supplier. The new Supplier Request Form, recently introduced by the SJSU Research Foundation Accounts Payable department, will ensure that the required information is available to accurately assess and set up suppliers after they are approved.
