We are having a busy February, with a number of critical projects in the works. Fortunately, the good energy and buzz on campus as faculty and students returned to face-to-face instruction this week is giving us plenty of ánimo to keep things moving forward!
One event that we are particularly excited about is Black Health and Wellness BEYOND Black History Month, a virtual panel taking place on March 23 and co-sponsored with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Department of African American Studies. At this roundtable, Black and African American community members at SJSU will share their research, insights, and best practices when it comes to health and wellness. Topics can span any area of physical and/or mental health, community-based research, personal reflections on health, and examples of radical and personal self-care. If you would like to present at the event, click here to submit a proposal by Friday, February 25.
Another great event–kicking off TODAY–is our workshop series for mid-career faculty on Promotion to Full: Finding the Path and Creating Your Plan. In this series, we demystify the process of applying for promotion to full professor, disrupting the assumption that just because you were tenured and promoted to associate, you somehow now understand what are the steps for advancing to the next level of your career. Please see the flyer immediately below for more details; registration links are provided in the calendar section of this newsletter.
Finally, Faculty Success has collaborated with members of the Professional Standards Committee of the Academic Senate to launch a one-stop RTP @ SJSU website, where you can find important RTP-related training materials, timelines, committee membership, and much more. Please note that this site is in development, with more content to be added over time. If you have ideas or suggestions for the site, please reach us via the contact info at the end of this newsletter.

We hope you’re feeling energized and excited about your RSCA projects, whatever form those take, but, if you’re finding it challenging to stay focused and move those projects from idea to publication, or if you’re struggling to manage your projects through pandemic-related delays, please reach out to us. We are available to consult on strategic planning and project management (register for our March workshop), time management and auditing (so that you can spend your time in line with your values), and even the use of particular tools to support your productivity--from making the most of your Google calendar (while maintaining your privacy), to email management, to using Trello, and more.
Our writing cafés can help you protect dedicated writing time in order to make progress on chapters, journal articles, grant applications, and creative work -- whatever you're writing. We follow the successful Shut Up and Write Tuesdays model, which includes a brief check-in, two 25 minute "pomodoros" of writing, and a shout-out of our successes (no achievement too large or too small). You can find us writing from 9-10 am PT, Monday through Friday in Zoom. You are also welcome to join our two new Night Owl cafés, hosted by our colleague Allie Butzlaff. Join us for as many sessions as you’d like, and subscribe to our café calendar for up-to-date details throughout the year. While an hour or two each week doesn’t sound like much, it adds up quickly. The discipline and shared sense of purpose that comes from writing with other colleagues can also remind you that you aren’t alone.

SJSU Adobe Digital Literacy Day
Join us @ SJSU Adobe Digital Literacy Day 2022 - March 1
In collaboration with Adobe, eCampus and the Center for Faculty Development are excited to announce the SJSU Adobe Digital Literacy Day 2022 taking place on March 1 from 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. on Zoom.
This event will showcase best practices in the use of Adobe Creative Cloud solutions in the classroom. The program kicks off with a keynote by Holly Johnson, an Adobe Digital Literacy Thought Leader. Following this engaging chat, we will host salons with SJSU Faculty Members and Adobe Education Leaders, who will showcase how they have engaged students in high impact practices via Adobe Creative Cloud. The program will conclude with a hands-on workshop that explores developing course resources/assignments that use Adobe Creative Cloud Express. The sessions will include interactive Q & A opportunities. Please visit the SJSU Adobe Digital Literacy Day webpage to learn more about the event and to register.

2021-22 Faculty Survey on Canvas Course Structure
As part of the CSU Student Quality Assurance Impact Research (SQuAIR) program, we are completing a study to evaluate the impact of course design on student experience and grades. There is a short questionnaire for faculty to complete based on one course of their choosing that they taught in Fall 2021, in any modality (in-person, online, or hybrid). The questionnaire asks about the features of Canvas you used for this course, and about the volume of questions you received from students about the features. Your input is very important for our evaluation of course design at SJSU and is much appreciated.

Snagit 2022 Introduction
Snagit is a screen capture and recording tool that gives many options for annotating and editing. Snagit licenses are free for current faculty and staff.
There are three new features in the Snagit 2022 release.
- Picture-in-picture: When recording a video in Snagit, you can choose to record your webcam which will overlay on top of the screen capture. (Note: The only editing option in Snagit video editor is to cut content. Use Camtasia or Canvas Studio if you’d like more editing features).
- First, take your screenshot and add annotations (ex: arrows, call-outs, highlights, blurs etc.).
- Then, in the Snagit Editor, select Create. And select Video from Image.
- Choose your webcam and the location for your video thumbnail.
- Finally, record your video and upload it to Canvas Studio to easily create captions and share your video with your students in Canvas.

- Snagit files will now be saved as .snagx which are compatible with both Macs and PCs making sharing snagit files much easier than before.
- Your Snagit library can now be housed in the cloud. Go to the Share menu, select Share Preferences, and click on the library tab. Then choose the library location.

Pregnant and Parenting Students in California: A Look at the CSU System
February 24 | 11:00am - 12:30pm
Despite having a higher GPA on average than their peers, 52 percent of student-parents leave college within six years without completing their degree. More often than not, pregnant and parenting students don’t see their needs and circumstances reflected in course policies and accommodations. What are the biggest challenges faced by this student population? Who is ultimately responsible for ensuring pregnant and parenting student success and how is the California State University System doing in supporting them?
Join the Michelson 20MM Foundation, Ascend at the Aspen Institute, the Blue Shield of California Foundation, California Competes, The Education Trust—West, and Tipping Point Community as we explore the current state of pregnant and parenting students in California and identify pathways that can help them succeed.

Congratulations to Dr. Saili Kulkarni, Associate Professor of Special Education, for being selected as the inaugural BIPOC Educator Fellow through the National Center for Research on Educator Diversity (NCRED). This organization aims to disseminate knowledge of research and practitioner scholarship, organize partnerships with other educator diversity programs in the US, and serve as an institutional home for evidence-based projects and outcomes related to educator diversity.
With support from the Kaufmann Foundation, the BIPOC Educator Fellow supports research directives and projects that draw from a forthcoming Handbook of Teachers of Color and Indigenous Teachers, which covers topics such as the recruitment and retention of BIPOC teachers, pedagogy and leadership, intersectionality work, and supporting minority institutions in educator preparation to build a diverse teacher candidate pool.
The directors of NCRED will select one BIPOC Educator Fellow from a national pool each academic year to carry out the mission of the organization and educator diversity projects from the handbook. The fellowship provides a spring semester course release to carry about the above initiatives and a summer stipend for a total of $30,000.
