Why It Matters

The United States incarcerates more of its citizens than any other democratic nation, and California has the largest prison and jail system in the country. Mass incarceration strains state budgets, depriving the public of resources that could strengthen social safety nets and education. Incarceration perpetuates social inequality, leaving many excluded from mainstream opportunities even after release. Formerly incarcerated individuals face significant challenges in finding housing, transportation, employment, and access to higher education. Project Rebound supports formerly incarcerated students in navigating academia and acquiring the essential mindset and skills for success.

What We Do

Project Rebound supports students from the admissions process through graduation and career readiness. Aligned with the university's mission of fostering inclusive education, we provide guidance, training, and holistic support to assist formerly incarcerated students’ paths to graduation and future opportunities for civil engagement. We collaborate with campus entities and external organizations to offer mentorship, student support, and strategies for long-term growth, ensuring the success of students. We welcome the support of other system-impacted individuals and social justice advocates who are committed to promoting a growth mindset.

SJSU hosts John Burris documentary and Q+A

Project Rebound and RCP sponsored a student and community event at the Hammer theater, showing a documentary about the life and legacy of John Burris. John Burris is an attorney who has advocated for civil rights, particularly affecting those who are victims of police brutality. His work has made sweeping changes within policies of our lifetimes, and so we were pleased to see many people from the school and community come to learn from the documentary and then from the man himself. He then gave us an inspiring Q+A, covering how we can persist even in tough times towards making a better future, on how we can all take action towards that future.
