The United States incarcerates more of its citizens than any other democratic nation, and California has the largest prison and jail system in the country. Mass incarceration strains state budgets, depriving the public of resources that could strengthen social safety nets and education. Incarceration perpetuates social inequality, leaving many excluded from mainstream opportunities even after release. Formerly incarcerated individuals face significant challenges in finding housing, transportation, employment, and access to higher education. Project Rebound supports formerly incarcerated students in navigating academia and acquiring the essential mindset and skills for success.

SJSU hosts John Burris documentary and Q+A
Project Rebound and RCP sponsored a student and community event at the Hammer theater, showing a documentary about the life and legacy of John Burris. John Burris is an attorney who has advocated for civil rights, particularly affecting those who are victims of police brutality. His work has made sweeping changes within policies of our lifetimes, and so we were pleased to see many people from the school and community come to learn from the documentary and then from the man himself. He then gave us an inspiring Q+A, covering how we can persist even in tough times towards making a better future, on how we can all take action towards that future.

Project Rebound at SJSU launched spring of this year. We hosted an event that was attended by SJSU students and other Project Rebound employees and alumni across California who showed their support.
