Bio
Sayma Akther is a Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at San José State University. Her research lies at the intersection of AI, machine learning, wearable sensing, and mobile health (mHealth), with a focus on building robust, interpretable, and equitable AI systems for real-world health applications. She is particularly interested in bridging methodological innovation with real-world deployment, ensuring that wearable AI systems are not only accurate but also transparent, ethical, and socially responsible.
Prior to joining SJSU, she was a Research Assistant at the MD2K (Mobile Data to Knowledge) Lab at the University of Memphis, where she worked on large-scale mobile sensing studies involving behavioral health and longitudinal real-world data collection. I am passionate about teaching and mentoring, currently supervising numerous Master's projects and advising the Responsible Computing Club.
