Description
History 170, Topics in American History, investigates selected periods and problems in the national past beginning with colonization. In this section, we will focus on the interaction of race and gender in American history from the colonial period to the present. Discussions and assignments will highlight cultural encounters between diverse men and women; the significance of migration and its impact on labor relations; the changing ideas of “masculinity” and “femininity”; and the roles of the law and popular culture in shaping racial and gender identities. In particular, special attention will be paid to the development of dominant white notions of gendered racial identities.
